The way the game managed to get information across both effectively and timely was impressive, and both of those are where TNC gets it wrong. A criticism I personally have of cutscenes in video games is that a lot of developers use them as "quick fixes" and don't quite understand that there's more to a cutscene than two people taking to each other, or in short they're incredibly inefficient.ĭespite a large portion of TNO's running time consisting of cutscenes, "inefficient" was never the word that came to mind, the opposite in fact. The way it not only borrowed techniques from cinema but used them in a way that was completely fulfilling and efficient was downright impressive, I honestly never thought I'd see the day where a AAA game was able to use cutscenes in a way that actually rivalled what could be done if it was adapted for another visual medium. A lot of people liked it because it managed to make the latter part of that statement so damn interesting.
WOLFENSTEIN 2 THE NEW COLOSSUS SERIES
The consensus will always be that the Machine Games's reboot series are half shooter, half cutscenes. The New Colossus felt like Machine Games took the praise from TNO is the wrong way. Ignoring all of this, the main point of contention people have with this game is clearly the story, the characters and the almost unbelievable inability to maintain a consistent tone. Overall, it only highlighted how utterly bland and unmemorable the levels were from a gameplay perspective. But including the option of stealth felt like a watered down version of it's implementation in TNO. If it wanted to be more action packed (which the marketing and tone heavily implied), then fine. I'm not going to damn the game for this too much. I also remember feeling like the choice I got to take was pretty much "fight or sneak down this tunnel", whereas TNO offered plenty of different avenues for stealth.

What that meant was even if the AI wasn't dogshit, the opportunity to traverse the map without being seen was simply much harder because there was less to hide behind. Even if they're not "larger", the bits in-between like burrows, corridors and vents felt no where near as plentiful as they were in TNO. To the first point, TNC's levels are noticeably more open. It's largely a combination of the general design philosophy matched with AI that are way too alert and easy to trigger. I don't understand how they got this so wrong. The New Colossus' level design is serviceable for players wanting to play it like a normal shooter, but dismal for anyone wanting to take the stealth approach. Moreover, there wasn't just a sole reason this was the case. Updates have made these problems less severe, but it's still not to the standard TNO set. You could no longer take that run & gun approach because the game wanted you to play it like a cover shooter, something akin to a Call of Duty on higher difficulties, which were notoriously terrible at offering genuine difficulty and just tweaked numbers to make you weaker and enemies stronger. Now I'm going to argue Wolfenstein should be a certain way just because of the names weight, especially given I played/play most of TNO with stealth, but the way the game dolled out damage was plain unfair and lost a lot of the fun of an old school FPS, something the previous games still had. Moreover it didn't really matter anyway, because on any difficulty other than the easiest, you could very easily be one shot by anything. Trying to recognise that you've actually been hit was genuinely a task, the small blood smears on the screen's edge didn't immediately convey the fact you're taking damage. Since every other comment here is acting like any criticism towards this game is inconceivable nonsense or somehow not valid, I'll level you my biggest problems with The New Colossus.įirstly, at launch specifically, this game had some of the worst hit detection and difficulty issues I've seen in a recent FPS.
